Background on Belviq Withdrawal

Weight-loss medications that require a prescription like  Belviq and Belviq XR are advertised as a solution to aid people with obesity feel satisfied when on low-calorie diets. Belviq was also recommended to overweight and obese people to address hypertension and diabetes. The FDA authorized the medicine in 2012, but it was contingent on Eisai undertaking a clinical trial to determine the drug’s safety and quality. The drug was manufactured by Arena Pharmaceuticals Gmbh in Switzerland.

Japanese drugmaker Eisai conducted a five-year analysis that looked at a double-blind study on 12,000 patients and discovered that individuals who took Belviq were diagnosed with cancer at a greater incidence than those who took a placebo.

The FDA declared in January 2020, after analyzing the trial data, that the medicine was probably linked to an elevated risk of various forms of cancer, including colorectal, lung, and pancreatic.

The FDA requested that Eisai remove the medicine from the U.S. market within weeks of its announcement, and Eisai responded by asking the FDA to voluntarily withdraw the drug.

As a response, the FDA advised physicians to discontinue prescribing Belviq and generic lorcaserin, inform patients using Belviq or lorcaserin about the elevated cancer risk identified in the clinical study, and explore alternate pharmaceutical or weight-loss options with them.

Patients and health providers who notice negative side effects or a malignancy such as pancreatic, colorectal, or lung cancer in a patient who took Belviq should contact the FDA.
