Allergan Breast Implant Lawsuit

Cancer from Natrelle & Allergan Breast Implant

Patients with breast cancer and women who want to feel more confident have already placed themselves in danger by undergoing surgery in the mistaken belief that the implants are safe and won’t hurt their bodies.

Allergan issued a recall of its Biocell textured breast implants and tissue expanders after women who had the implants developed large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), a rare kind of non-lymphoma. Some women have filed lawsuits saying that Allergan was aware of the cancer risk connected with its breast implants and tissue expanders but failed to tell the FDA and warn patients.

The Allergan BIOCELL or Natrelle textured breast implants were subject to a recall due to a six-fold increased risk of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma in customers who used them (BIA-ALCL). BIA-ALCL is a kind of non-lymphoma Hodgkin’s that can spread to other sections of the body. It is not a type of breast cancer. The following are some of the warning indicators: lumps, changes in breast size & form, pain, redness, and swelling in the breast area. This type of cancer is usually discovered seven to nine years after the implant is inserted, and symptoms present anywhere from six months to 26 years after the implant is implanted.

What exactly is BIA-ALCL?

Breast Implant-Associated Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a non-lymphoma Hodgkin’s that has been linked to breast implants (cancer of the immune system). BIA-ALCL is most commonly seen in the scar tissue and fluid around the breast implant. BIA-ALCL is a dangerous disease that can lead to death if not treated quickly. In most cases, the implant and surrounding scar tissue are removed during surgery. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are also used to treat some individuals.
