The police responded to what was described as a horrific crash on US Highway 59 this past Sunday. On May 3, at about 9:30 pm, witnesses say a man driving a Honda tried to enter the freeway from the Hillcroft exit. As he merged into traffic, a man driving a Cadillac slammed into the back of the rear-end of the Honda.
The impact was so severe, it sent the Honda careening into a concete highway pillar. The driver of the Honda was ejected from the car. The driver of the Cadillac stopped his vehicle at first. However, he did so on top of the body of the injured driver. Witnesses yelled to tell him that he was on top of the body. The driver of the Cadillac, upon hearing this, took off and fled the scene.
Witnesses called 911 immediately. While the police were arriving at the accident scene, a couple of the witnesses actually followed the hit and run driver to his home in Southwest Houston. Once there, they called the cops and let them know they were outside the vehicle that had just been involved in a fatal crash on US 59.
The man in the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. The police don’t know if this was due to the initial crash or from being run over by the Cadillac. His name has not been released.
The police immediately proceeded to the home of the hit and run driver and arrested him later Sunday night. The driver, who has not yet been identified, was arrested and charged with failing to render aid following an accident. The police expect to charge him with intoxicated manslaughter as well.
